Quaintly housed in an old fire station in Spokane's historic Warehouse District, Robert Karl Winery is a dream come true for owners Joe and Rebecca Gunselman. This boutique Spokane winery has already made its mark in the production of award winning, in demand vintages! Robert Karl Cellars first wine, a '99 cabernet sauvignon, drew rave reviews and their polished, Bordeaux blends and varietal red wines have been sought after ever since.
The winery produces handcrafted, premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Claret, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and a dry Cabernet Franc Rosé with grapes from Washington 's finest vineyards. Joe Gunselman, head wine maker, is a physician by day but his passion is winemaking! He views winemaking as an art but draws on his science background and applies it to the winemaking process. Joe makes every effort to preserve the varietal flavors in his wine. When young, the classical flavors beam through and then as the wine matures in the cellar, the flavors of cedar, tobacco, and leather develop.
Robert Karl Cellars crafts their wines exclusively
from fruit grown in the Horse Heaven Hills, one of Washington's newest
American Viticultural Areas (AVA). Gunselman chose grapes from central
WA because he believes the "terrior", with the variable
of irrigation, combines to give one of the best (if not THE BEST)
places in the world to grow vitis vinifera , grape vines. Several
components contribute to this grape growing quality. The number of
sunny days coupled with the length of the day, the unique east-west
ridges of the Columbia Valley which provide an excellent south facing
slope, and ideal night to day temperature variations. Unique soil
composition gives the final ingredient.
