Poised on a green hilltop north of Spokane and overlooking a valley, Townshend Cellar is one of the newer Spokane wineries to take an award-winning leap into the WA wine scene. Don Townshend ‘s first vintage aged three years in oak to produce a 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon that was listed as one of the top Cab’s in the state when it was released!
From that "humble" beginning was born an on going love affair with wine making. Townshend Cellar is dedicated to producing quality wines from the grapes of Washington state. Their wines derive their distinctive flavors from extensive oak aging in small French and American oak barrels and the selection of grapes from some of the finest vineyards in the Columbia Valley.
The winery focuses on the production of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay. Their particular "style" and what differentiates their vintages from others is the length of time the wine spends in the aging process. Depending on the grape, 24 to 30 months is spent in American and French oak barrels before the wines are aged another year in the bottle. Townshend Cellars is known for its full-bodied fruit-forward wines that deliver a bold taste while lingering on the palate as their oak history comes through. Consequently their small lots of quality wines, ports and dessert wines are still winning awards.
A trip to the Townshend tasting room is well worth the short drive north of town. Settled on the side of a hilltop the winery offers a panoramic view to accompany the taste of the award winning vintages.
